i use the pencils first to lay down a light layer of color in certain areas, to add depth under the marker and as a guideline as to where i need to shade with the markers. then marker over that; the alcohol-based inks blend the pencil pigments really nicely, and the pencil underneath helps keep the marker from looking too streaky.
